With today's busy way of life, it's so easy to cut corners and "dump" clothing when you disrobe and shut the door behind you to conceal the mess beyond. If you're looking to renovate your walk-in, or perhaps you're starting from scratch, then give your clothes the attention they deserve when it comes to creating your walk-in closet by following these suggestions...
Declutter
First and foremost, get started with a wardrobe cull and make Marie Kondo proud by reducing any excess clothing, shoes, and general styling accoutrement you've accrued over the years. This will leave you with more of an idea of how much you have to work with - a sort of inventory - when it comes to the design phase of the wardrobe.
While you're cleaning out the wardrobe, get rid of all your mismatching coat hangers and invest in matching ones - this is something super easy and yet makes such a huge difference!
Proper planning and preparation...
... prevents poor performance (and yes, we tweaked that saying slightly to make it g-friendly).
Now that you've decluttered and have your clothing inventory you can plan out the design of your wardrobe to ensure everything you have has its own place to call home. Everyone has different ways of storing items, but we find that hanging space is SO much easier to sort clothing and keep them fresh and wrinkle-free. With this in mind, allocate enough long hanging space for dresses, pants and coats, and the rest of the hanging can be shorter for shirts and jumpers in a double-hanging format to maximise space.
Size matters
If you're dealing with a smaller space (actually, even if you're not) remember to take the cabinetry to the ceiling to take advantage of every square inch of space. This hard-to-reach storage can house seasonal clothing or those extra bits and pieces you need to store but don't often need.
Another thing to consider when designing your walk-in robe is open shelving to display your favourite bags, shoes and perfumes - a great way to create a feature out of your favourite purchases.
If you have plenty of space to work with, then consider incorporating a makeup station paired with a mirror and ottoman for an extra luxe look. We also love the addition of an ottoman - centred in the room gives an opulent feel - or a built-in bench seat, not just for aesthetics, but they're also something you can use when trying on shoes, or to use as a resting spot for when you're next trying to sort out new clothing purchases (guilty!).
If you have a spare wall then artwork is also a great way to inject some personality into the walk-in robe - just select something that references the vibe in your bedroom so that there is a nice flow between the two.
Colour and style
Select something that references the other cabinetry profiles in the rest of your home to ensure you have a cohesive flow throughout and create a point of difference in the means of colour/finish of the cabinetry. Another great way to amp up the design factor is through the hardware (cabinetry knobs/pulls). Check out Momo Handles or Made Measure for incredible designs.
Let there be light
Feature lighting such as pendants or wall lights (in addition to your downlights) will add more character to the space. If you're low on natural light then incorporate a full-length mirror - not only is it going to help you see your cute outfits, but it will bounce light around and give the illusion of a larger space.
