We were so excited when our gorgeous client engaged us to help her furnish this newly-purchased architecturally-designed home by Profile Architecture, and you'll soon see why...
As we approached the home we could see a quaint facade with - what looked like - the very hint of a contemporary extension peaking out from behind. We were right! Upon walking through the front door we were met with stunning spotted gum hardwood floors that extended out through the main floor that boasted an incredible void and elements of steel, timber and glass that drew our eyes to the green vista beyond.
The brief was simple: to help finish off the interior of the home in a way that is family-friendly, warm and inviting, but that also complements the sleek, contemporary nature of the build . Our client selected a moodboard (one of the many provided in the initial interior design and decoration consultation's return brief) that featured a mix of timber, warm leather, plenty of texture and accents of black - something we came up with that we thought would finish off the home beautifully. This was the end result:
Entry
The front door opened into a vast open-planned space, so we thought this was a great opportunity to create a purposeful eye-catching entry fit with comfortable upholstered bench seat, oversized plant, feature rug and incorporated our client's existing buffet and abstract artwork.
We selected some beautiful Eadie Lifestyle cushions that showcased muted blue tones to tie bridge a soft and calming feeling with the vibrant abstract artwork. The raised textured pattern in the wool rug provided visual interest without being too busy. Don't think the black legs of the ottoman was an afterthought - we purposely hand-selected this piece because the silhouette and black detail referenced the black frame of the artwork, skirting, and steel windows in the extension. It's these little considerations that add to the overall look.
Living Room
This space is frequented by the family for chill-out and TV-time, and lays smack-back in the hub of the home, bordered by the dining room, kitchen, void, and staircase. Furniture layout constraints meant that nailing the silhouettes of the furniture was crucial.
We opted for a gorgeous boucle chaise sofa by Globe West - its fine frame was a winner in our eyes, as we wanted to maximise bums on seats without it being too bulky for the space. The muted blues from the entry flowed into this space to contrast against the mix of white, beige and greys seen in the base.
A marble-top side table with fine black legs (see, it's all about referencing!) was selected in lieu of a coffee table and a stunning oak buffet was used as the entertainment unit - the slatting detail was perfect, as our client had set-top box that needed to "speak" to the remote whilst still being camouflaged.
Conversational Space
Our client was unsure about what to do with this extra space that sat directly in front of the kitchen and below the void. The sky-high ceiling and banks of glass made this a standout spot in the home, so we wanted to not only do it justice, but also provide our client with a functional space. Girls' nights and cocktails was mentioned in passing during the consultation, which quickly sparked our idea for the conversational space.
Luxurious velvet swivel chairs were selected for comfort - the flexibility of the swivel function making it more open to the bordering living room, dining room and kitchen. A stunning blue-grey artsilk rug helped ground the setting, and the plush toffee-coloured cushions were used as a contrast colour that also played on the surrounding timber tones.
Outdoor
The mid-floor balcony just needed some extra layers. An outdoor rug was selected to frame the existing concrete-top dining setting and, in addition to that, we thought a comfortable spot to sit would be ideal to complete this space, so we added some gorgeous timber slatted outdoor chairs with a black terrazzo side table to reference the black accents inside. Some potted plants were all that was left to help create a bit more privacy from the neighbours and add to the beautiful green vista.
The downstairs covered entertaining area (complete with outdoor kitchen and projector) was a blank canvas with metres of polished concrete to work with. We immediately thought this space needing some layers and texture to transform it into a comfortable and cozy outdoor living space that could be lounged in for hours of movie marathons and BBQ's.
Given the sheer scale of the space, we thought the giant outdoor 4-seater sofa selected was the perfect furniture piece. We paired it with an outdoor ottoman and side table to create more flexibility (the ottoman could be moved and used as extra seating if needed, and the side table for drinks and food), as well as the plushest-of-plush woven outdoor rug (which our client just adores) and plush outdoor cushions to really cement that indoor-outdoor living room vibe.
